Please let us know
Last week it came to our attention that Rangitikei farmer, farming contractor, and Horizons regional councillor Bruce Gordon had been contacted by Rabobank wanting to close his business accounts because he was no longer borrowing from it.
Bruce received a letter from the bank in June, saying he had 20 days to move his transactions elsewhere, because the bank was reviewing its policy. His experience was highlighted in the New Zealand Herald in this article which appeared on the 9th July.
Federated Farmers is very surprised and very concerned by this behaviour. So, we contacted Rabobank to ask for an explanation, with the bank confirming this was indeed its policy.
We are now considering our options, including whether to take this up with the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, the Reserve Bank, and/or politically with Ministers and MPs. To help us with next steps we want to hear from farmers who have had similar experiences, whether with Rabobank or with any bank.
