Dedicated rural representation – A must-have for Gisborne

September 21, 2021 by Toby Williams

In November 2020 the Gisborne District Council voted in favour of including Māori wards, this, in turn, prompted a representation review.

The review began in May this year with the council engaging with us on what fair representation looks like by conducting a pre-engagement survey, this resulted in the Council producing an initial proposal for representation of our district. The initial proposal features a reshape of representation, in addition to the mayor, 13 Councillors being 5 Māori ward Councillors and 8 general ward councilors.
It’s not too late to make your submission, and it is not just your individual submission that will help to persuade the GDC to retain dedicated rural representation but the weight of all our submissions together.

Don’t leave it to someone else, it is vital that we retain our rural Councillors, but we really need your help. To those that have submitted THANK YOU! Please keep helping by sharing this and encouraging all your contacts to make a submission too. Submissions close at 4 pm this Friday the 24th https://www.gdc.govt.nz/council/have-your-say/representation-review
